Hiring Heroes Act of 2011

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, introduced the Hiring Heroes Act of 2011 on May 12, 2011. According to a fact sheet released by Senator Murray, the legislation aims to help veterans successfully transition to the civilian workforce despite the fact that many veterans are finding it difficult to do just that.

Among the many new and modified programs authorized by the bill are:

- Making participation in the Transition Assistance Program mandatory for separating service members;

- Requiring the Department of Labor to engage with each veteran on a periodic basis to determine whether the veteran is employed or whether the veteran might be interested in further assistance;

- Creating a competitive grant program for nonprofit organizations that provide mentorship and job training programs that are designed to lead to job placements; and

- Allowing the Department of Defense to create a pilot program to provide paid work experience with civilian employees and contractors to facilitate the transition for service members that are 180 days from separating.

Stay tuned for more information on this Act as it moves through Congress.
