Recruiter Spotlight: Tony Hoffman

Tony is a member of the Orion Recruiting Team in Virginia Beach. He is a prior Navy FC that has found success in the civilian sector since leaving the Navy in 2000. He has had an interesting path that led to his position here at Orion, spending time as an Employment Educator with the Navy’s TAP program and as a Public Speaker traveling across the country and providing Job Market Approach Strategies to transitioning military personnel. Originally from Chicago, Tony is married to Kristen (an Elementary School Teacher in Virginia Beach); and they have two children, Ethan and Chloe.

If you could give just one piece of career advice to a transitioning military professional, what would it be?

If I could give one piece of advice to transitioning military personnel, it would be to dedicate a significant amount of time to investigating private industry and to remain open minded. I believe too many of our service members lose sight of the true skill sets and practical knowledge that they possess and find themselves labeled by their “Ratings” or “MOS”. This makes it difficult for them to find where they fit in the civilian workforce; many times they come out and assume that they can only work on Aircraft, Ships, Weapons Systems, Submarines, etc., and this is simply not true. I believe Orion’s continued success in assisting Veterans has a direct correlation to the fact that we do a great job educating our candidates and exposing them to a diverse grouping of opportunities that they would have never associated with their talents.

What do you like most about working at Orion?

We have a positive impact on people's lives every day. It doesn’t get any better than working in an environment where everyone is “making it happen” and doing everything in their power to continue to do so. I personally pride myself on “making it happen”, whatever “it” is and getting things done. Working in an office where everyone else shares that mentality, drive, and passion makes this the perfect pairing of job satisfaction and working environment.

Please share one interesting fact about yourself that you would like candidates to know.

I’m a huge Cubs, Bulls, and Bears fan. My office is littered with icons like Ditka, Jordan, “The Fridge”, and Wrigley Field…if you don’t like these teams, at least pretend to!
