Recruiter Spotlight: Karin Roberts

Karin grew up in a small log cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with her parents and two sisters. They spent their time outdoors, hunting and fishing, exploring and climbing trees, as Karin didn’t have electricity until she attended Junior High when she moved to a big city (population 2,000). She attended Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI, and pursued a degree in Biomedical Science while playing on the varsity women’s basketball team. While finishing up school, Karin worked in landscape management until she decided to join the Navy and explore her adventurous nature.

Karin then attended Officer Candidate School in Pensacola and was selected for flight school and ultimately became designated as a Weapons Systems Officer in the F/A-18F Superhornet. She was assigned to the VFA-103 Jolly Rogers out of Oceana, VA, and deployed in support of OEF in 2010 aboard the USS EISENHOWER. During her seven month deployment, her squadron provided close air support for U.S. and coalition ground forces in Afghanistan. While deployed, Karin completed over 40 combat missions over Afghanistan and was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.

If you could give just one piece of career advice to a transitioning military professional, what would it be?

Find what motivates you and pursue it. Your military career has set you up to succeed – maintain the skills you’ve acquired and apply them to every new challenge. There are opportunities out there – explore, research, prepare, and go for it!

What do you like most about working at Orion?

A work environment of peers and colleagues who understand and communicate with one other and our candidates. During the decision to find a new career, finding someone you trust is invaluable. Having been a Navy Officer and an Orion candidate, I feel honored to be a part of our mission to help veterans find jobs.

Please share one interesting fact that you would like candidates to know.

I LOVE the outdoors. I escape to backpack, kayak, bike, and hike whenever I get the chance with my golden retriever, Callie.
