Recruiter Spotlight: Tim Duba

Tim Duba is a USNA graduate and former Surface Warfare Officer, born in Oxnard, CA. He is a "Navy brat" that comes from a family with extensive ties to the military. He served his entire Naval career on the USS Cleveland.

Upon leaving the military, Tim had no idea what he wanted to do, so he went back to school at the University of Florida for his MBA. Upon graduating from their one-year program, he received an offer to join a large hotel chain's Leadership Development Program.

There, he received training in hotel operations, sales, consulting, etc. and was eventually sent to work at their flagship property in Chicago. After a year-and-a-half, Tim was transferred to San Diego, CA. Three years later, he decided that he wanted to explore the sales world a bit more and contacted Orion International to see what was positions were available. Tim was selected for the Orion Sales team in San Diego and recently became a recruiter.

If you could give just one piece of career advice to a transitioning military professional, what would it be?

The best advice I received during my transition was to be open to every opportunity. When I first began looking, I only wanted to live in San Diego. I was even willing to look at jobs I knew were not a good fit for me if they were in San Diego. Needless to say, I didn’t have much luck because I was applying for jobs for which I did not match up well. Once I opened up my search and focused more on a cultural fit and actual job satisfaction, I was able to see many more opportunities and found that I am really ok living nearly anywhere if I enjoy my job.

What do you like most about working at Orion?

Hands down I love the ability to meet and assist so many people going through their transition phase; whether they are leaving the military and seeing their first interviews or looking to change companies or job types. I feel very rewarded by the work I do, and there is no better phone call to receive than when the candidate calls to say “I got an offer!”

Please share one interesting fact that you would like candidates to know.

I spend all of my free time surfing or riding my Harley Davidson!
